It operated as a hospital until 1930, when it was converted into a dormitory for U.S. Navy personnel stationed at the nearby Governors Island. In 1977, the Ellis Island Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and became a National Historic Landmark. In 1984, the hotel was reopened to the public after undergoing extensive renovation. The Ellis Island Hotel features two restaurants, a bar, and a coffee shop. The hotel also offers a variety of tours and educational programs about Ellis Island and its history.
